Why I’m Choosing Slow Fashion (and Why It Matters)

There’s something that’s been on my mind a lot lately—how easy it is to get caught up in fast fashion. I totally get it. The prices are cheap, trends come and go in a blink, and it’s everywhere. But once you start learning about what’s really behind it all… it’s hard to unsee.

At Sundays Vintage, I’ve always loved the idea of giving things a second life. Whether it’s an old blanket turned into a bag or something special you find in a vintage shop, there’s beauty in reusing what already exists. And honestly, I think we need more of that.

The Real Cost of Fast Fashion

It’s easy to forget that every new item of clothing takes energy, water, and resources to make. And a lot of fast fashion ends up in landfill after barely being worn. In Australia alone, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of clothing are thrown away each year—and a lot of it is made from synthetic fabrics that don’t break down.

And then there’s the human side. So many of these cheap pieces are made by people (mostly women) working in tough conditions for very little pay. It just doesn’t sit right with me.

Why Secondhand and Upcycled Just Makes Sense

For me, secondhand isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about soul. Vintage pieces tell stories. Upcycling is creative, thoughtful, and often surprisingly practical. And shopping this way means you’re not adding to the huge demand for more stuff—we're just finding new ways to love what already exists.

Plus, there’s something really special about wearing something no one else has. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind bag made from an old wool blanket or a pre-loved jacket with a bit of history, it feels more meaningful.

What I’m Trying to Do at Sundays Vintage

I’m not trying to be perfect, just more intentional. Every piece I make uses secondhand materials—mostly vintage wool, offcuts, and things that would’ve been thrown away. I try to keep it low waste and make small batches, slowly and with care.

It’s not about keeping up with trends—it’s about creating pieces that last and feel like you.

Let’s Do Things Differently

I know secondhand isn’t everyone’s go-to yet, but I really believe it’s one of the easiest, most powerful changes we can make. Even just choosing one thing secondhand instead of new? That makes a difference.

So if you’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the fast fashion cycle, maybe this is your sign to slow down a little. Whether that means shopping vintage, borrowing from a friend, or fixing up something you already have—it all counts.

Thanks for being here and being part of this little corner of slow fashion. 💛
